Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet Logs 30,000+ Trips Across Five Islands
Abu Dhabi has completed over 30,000 autonomous vehicle trips across Yas Island, Saadiyat, Masdar City, Al Reem, and Al Maryah. The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet began as a pilot program and has since tripled in size within a year. It now plays a central role in the city’s transportation strategy, with plans underway for a broader rollout across residential areas.
Fleet Expansion: 44 Vehicles and Counting
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet currently operates 44 driverless vehicles, a significant leap from its initial deployment. These vehicles serve key destinations, including tourist hotspots and emerging residential zones. The expansion to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands earlier this year marked a pivotal moment, tripling the fleet and signaling readiness for broader integration.
By 2040, officials aim for one in four trips in Abu Dhabi to be powered by autonomous transport. This includes not only robo-taxis but also smart buses and delivery robots, all coordinated through mobile apps that handle bookings and payments seamlessly.
Multi-Operator Model: TXAI, WeRide, Uber, and More
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet is powered by a multi-operator ecosystem. TXAI, developed by Bayanat, launched the emirate’s first autonomous taxi trials on Yas Island. Since then, global autonomous driving firm WeRide has joined the rollout, expanding services to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands. Uber was integrated into the platform in late 2024, enabling broader ride-hailing access. Local transport partner Tawasul Transport also supports operations in high-traffic zones. All providers operate under the regulatory oversight of the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), which ensures safety, certification, and interoperability across the fleet.
Safety First: Human Error Eliminated, Certification Required
Globally, human error accounts for 94% of road accidents. Abu Dhabi’s strategy with its autonomous fleet is built to eliminate that risk. Each vehicle undergoes rigorous testing, international certification, and approval from local safety authorities before hitting the road. During trial phases, trained safety operators remain onboard to monitor performance and ensure compliance.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) oversees this process, ensuring that only vehicles demonstrating exceptional reliability and resilience are approved for public use.
Inclusive Mobility: Independence for All
The benefits of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet extend far beyond convenience. For families, seniors, and people of determination, autonomous mobility offers newfound independence. A resident in Al Reem can summon a driverless taxi for elderly parents’ medical appointments without needing to drive. No license, no stress—just safe, reliable transport.
Logistics companies also stand to gain. Autonomous delivery vehicles operate 24/7, eliminating driver fatigue and reducing operational costs. These efficiencies are expected to reshape business models across logistics, insurance, and data services.
Urban Integration: 3–5 Year Rollout Plan
While the fleet currently serves flagship destinations, the next phase involves expanding into complex urban environments. Over the next three to five years, residents can expect a phased rollout guided by ITC’s regulatory oversight and ongoing technological validation.
This transition is designed to build public trust gradually, ensuring that autonomous mobility becomes a natural part of daily life, not a novelty.
Global Spotlight: Autonomous Week and Strategic Vision
Abu Dhabi Autonomous Week, scheduled for November 10–15, will showcase the emirate’s vision to the world. The event includes the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Summit, DRIFTx exhibition, RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2025, and the Autonomous Racing League. These platforms will bring together global leaders in policy, investment, and robotics.
The Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, chaired by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, coordinates the emirate’s strategy. Under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the council ensures that innovation, safety, and sustainability remain at the core of every deployment.
Future Forward: From Tech Showcase to Daily Routine
Autonomous taxis are now a regular sight on Abu Dhabi’s roads, serving areas residents travel daily. With over 30,000 trips completed and a fleet of 44 vehicles in operation, the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Fleet is transitioning from pilot phase to everyday utility. Within the next five years, using a driverless ride is expected to become a routine part of city life, supported by continued expansion and public adoption.
